LB's Game of the Year

Ali and I are trying to decide the Lunabean Game of the Year. Last year's GOTY was "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR)". This year, we're torn. We won't say between what, however, as we don't want to taint the voting.
We're not going to deem the GOTY the game that you all choose, but I though it'd be interesting to see what you all think.

Hmm...well I guess Half-Life 2 didn't make the cut, so I'll have to vote for MP2 as it was the very reason I brushed the dust off of the Wavebird. Sequel to the greatest GameCube title to date? Yes, please. It didn't let me down, and my roomies and WhiskeyNight™ buddies love the Samus Deathmatches. I was impressed by several other titles on the list (namely MGS3 & KOTORII), but none of them to the same degree as the spin attack. ;)

Yeah, we didn't play HL2 because we only cover consoles. So, the list is comprised of games we played. Ali and I both think that Tales of Symphonia is an amazing game and KOTOR II is up there, too. Thinking about it some more, Metroid Prime 2 definitely deserves some consideration. Last year's GOTY was KOTOR. Can you imagine lunabean declares two consecutive RPGs as GOTY? Egad, man!

ya know
i have to say...in terms of game of the year...it HAS to be halo2.
obviously it lacked the depth of some of the other games on the list...
but in terms of a game of the year...one that gamer historians will look back on and use as a benchmark for the times - it has to be halo2.
the money it made and the hype it generated will have a huge impact on the way games and gaming are viewed in the future
also, the online element - revolutionary...the rankings and just all the technology...i think people will look back on halo2 as the dawn of true online gaming across millions of homes
so, when you think of game of the year - in 2010, will you remember mgs3 or mp2? i think halo2 will be remembered much more and for good reason.
that having been said, i personally would pick
NINJA GAIDEN
as game of the year....
that was the best game i have ever sidled up to.

My feelings are between two, and there probably the two biggest games around this year and had the biggest hype before being released!
I must say Halo 2 is a bit of a let down with the story mode but the multiplayer blows me away everytime I play, so it gets my vote! :D

No, it doesn't. I recall Enter the Matrix making an almost identical hype when it was released, but I didn't see it getting any GOTY nods because IT SUCKED. Halo 2 wasn't a bad game persay, but it was in no way excellent. The multiplayer aspect may be revolutionary for Xbox LIVE, but come on...OpenGL Quake pulled it all off 10 years ago for the real internet.
If you watch the Special Edition pork loin, you'll even see Bungie talking about how they scrapped a nice portion of the game in AUGUST of this year (The COMPLETE Halo 2, you'll note, will be offered as a launch game for the Xbox 2). To have delivered the "full" product two months after that, you can see the holes in the game when you play it. All the game is by this point is a franchise title...I guess they should have included a spoon in the special edition for some people to lap it up with.

Personally, I think this year sucked in the world of gaming. Sure, there were some good games...most of them mentioned in the poll, but, jeez, could we have another sequel? Sequels are fine and all, but, almost by definition, sequels can't be revolutionary, and I think a game needs to be revoltionary to be "Game of the Year". For that reason, I'm leaning "Tales of Symphonia"...but, still, even that game had some flaws.

I could not disagree more with you two about none of this year's sequels doing anything revolutionary. For the most part you'd be correct, but MGS3 changed the entire series. It's infinitely deeper than the other games, not to mention it's more fun.
As far as Halo 2 is concerned, money doesn't make a game good, and quality is what GOTY is about.
And Chris, I totally disagree with you about PoP:WW. I hate how games have to be "dark" and "edgy" now. Decapitations have no place in PoP games. I wish I could take WW back and wait for a real sequel to PoP:tSoT. That's what I wanted, not Grand Theft Auto Middle-Eastern Monarchy.
