I bought an Elite on release day in advance of Halo 3 coming out later this month and have been getting very little use out of it due to not having many games so have mostly been playing demos and live arcade. I recently borrowed Gears of War from a friend and was playing it fine on Wednesday night, then tried to play it again last night and kept getting a disc read error. I took the disc out to clean it and noticed a circular scratch right around the outside edge!

I've read online about people getting discs scratched when moving their console from vertical to horizontal while switched on, but my console has been sat horizontally in my AV stand ever since I bought it. Rang Microsoft and they said I'll have to send it in for repair and pay £10 to get the disc replaced. They even asked if I could try another game to see if it does the same thing! So now I have to be without a console for 20-25 days, be £10 out of pocket to replace a friends game, AND lose most of my free month of Live!

Anyone else had this problem?

I haven't had this specific issue, but as for your month of live, they usually give you another month for free, and if they don't mention it, I'd bring it up to them so that you don't lose out (they offered it to us for our xbox when we send it in).

Interestingly enough, we pulled out Bioshock today to return it, and there was a circular scratch, maybe 2 inches long, in the middle of the disc. We had no trouble playing the game, and the console remained in the vertical position the whole time...but the scratch certainly wasn't there when we inserted the disc, and today was the first time we removed it.

Luckily enough the scratch didn't seem to bother those at Gamecrazy...

Trance, I don't know if you've sent it in or not, but you could try putting in a crap game, a demo game, or even a crap music cd to see if it scratches it.

I've put it vertically and it seems to be OK. So far it hasn't scratched anything else. Who knows? The Gears of War disc just might have been thicker than normal or something.

Either way the 'box is still WAY louder than I expected. At night when I'm playing with the volume low, it drives me to distraction.

I have that same problem with mine (Just a premium). It's ridiculous when I'm trying to watch a movie at night were I can't have the volume to loud because people sleeping. So loud. I'm always having to go up an down on the volume to watch anything.
